The Department of Commerce. Pachaiyappa's College has a historic beginning emerged from the School of Commerce established way back in the year 1886. Ours is the first institution to offer Commerce Education not only in India but in the whole of Asia with typewriting, shorthand and accountancy and auditing courses, as an introductory course. From its humble beginning, the School of Commerce has grown into full fledged Department of Commerce, a constituent college in the University of Madras. In the year 1943, B.Com (pass course) was introduced and B.Com. (Hons) course was started in 1948.
In the year 1957 B.Com. (Hons.) course was replaced by 3 years B.Com. course. In 1958 P.G. Course (M.Com.) was introduced to replace the B.Com. (Hons.) course. In the year 1965, the 1st optional subjects like Advanced Currency and Banking was introduced at B.Com. (Level). In 1967, additional affiliation for special subjects like Special Accounts and Auditing was received from the University of Madras. With the considerable number of Faculty members acquiring research qualification. M.Phil course was introduced in the year 1989. In the year 1996 the Dept. of commerce reached further mile stone by introducing research programme leading to Ph.D. (Part-time).
The Department has a big Library with plenty of books and rare collections authored by eminent scholars. The Department has a computer laboratory with more than 20 computers to facilitate the department for regular use with internet browsing.
The PG and Research department of commerce, is a jewel of Pachaiyappa's College, established in the year 1943 and completing 75 years of excellence and dedication of services to the student community from, diverse social background. The biggest department in the college with 3 sections in UG, PG, M.Phil, P.hd( both part time and full time programs, have a faculty strength of 18 and has a chequered reputation as the first department which offered commerce as a subject in Asia.
The platinum jubilee celebrations of the Commerce Department witnessed several academic activities and achievements under the dynamic leadership of Dr. S. Sampathraj with the support of faculty members, Principal and management.
