NSS - NATIONAL SERVICE SCHEME

From the year 1842 to 1872 the Principals of Pachaiyappa's Institution tried to provide sporting facilities and activities to their students. They were not very successful, because no ground was available for conducting sports at Esplanade. The grounds were intended for military purposes. In 1872 the government revised its opinion and gave the ground for sports activities and also permitted to engage the services of Madras Army to coach students in athletics and other sports. The services of Army Men could not be rendered continuously to the students as the regiments had to be moved from place to place frequently.
