About the Department

PG & RESEARCH DEPARTMENT OF PHYSICS

The Department of Physics, Pachaiyappa's College. Chennai, started in the year 1939 under the headship of Prof. R. N. Selvam. He occupied the chair until 1954. He also served as Vice-Principal in our College. He was followed by Dr. V. P. Narayanan Nambiar who set a standard for teaching of Physics for over 20 years. The Noble Laureate and veteran Physicist. Sir C. V. Raman visited the Department of Physics in 1956.

A renowned teacher and an able associationist, Prof. K.P. Kandasamy (1957 1989) served in our department, who rendered his service for the welfare of teaching community. The Physics Department was elevated as Post Graduate Department in the year 1979. Prof. K. Ekamabaram was the Head of the Department of Physics at that time and later he was elevated as Vice-Principal of the College. Physics Department is one of the first undergraduate Departments. The P.G. course in Physics got its affiliation from the University of Madras in the year 1996. Dr. M. Sargurumoorthy (1982-1985) was inducted in the Department of Physics as P.G. Professor and Head of the Department under deputation by the Govt. of Tamilnadu. The Quinquennial Commission for Premier Institutions visited during his period and gave satisfactory report to the Government. Dr. K. Manoharan became the Head of the Department of Physics in 1985. Later he served as Principal-in-Charge during 1994-95. Prof. C. V. Kothandaraman retired in the year 1986. Prof. K. Jayaraman was the Prof. and Head of the Department of Physics during 1995-1999. The PG Department of Physics was elevated to a research Department in the year 1991.

Dr. M. Thiagasundaram (1999-2002) became the Prof. and Head of the Department of Physics. He was a Professor in-charge for Evening classes during 1999-2000. In his period, the release of BEATS, the annual departmental magazine, was initiated. So far. 12 volumes of Beats magazines were Mr. Thirunavukarasu. AGOT of PTB inaugurated the conference released successfully. PG and Research Department of Physics organized a three day National Conference on Spectrophysics (NCONS 2000) during 9-11 August, 2000

Prof. M. S. Kalyanasundaram was the Prof. and Head of the Department of Physics during 2002-2003, followed by Prof. R. B. Mani as the Head of the Department of Physics during 2003-2005. Dr. A. Subramanyam was the Prof, and Head of the Department of Physics during 2005-2007. He established Applied Electronics Laboratory in the department. PG and Research Department of Physics organized a four day International Conference on Spectrophysics (INCONS 2005) during 9-12 February, 2005.

Dr. M. Parasuraman served as Principal in-charge during 2003-2005. Dr. T.J. Bhoopathy was the Head of the Department of Physics during 2007-2011. PG and Research Department of Physics has organized a two day National Conference on Recent Advances in Physics (NCRAP 2008) during 1-2 Feb. 2008.

Dr. S. Gunasekaran, Associate Professor, PG and Research Department of Physics had the honour of being selected for the post of Registrar. Periyar University, Salem during this period (August 2008 to August 2011). Dr. P. Arulmozhichelvan assumed the charge of the Head of the Department of Physics on 01.06.2011 Dr. S. Gunasekaran (2011-2013) became the Head of the Department of Physics. He has shown keen interest in research, organization of conferences and technical symposiums. PG and Research Department of Physics has organized a three day National Conference on Spectrophysics (NCONS 2012)

Special mention must be made on Dr. 5. Gunasekaran who has guided 67 Ph.D. scholars during his service. The PG and Research Department of Physics has acquired the very unique distinction of producing a Doctor of Science Awardee.

Dr. S. Gunasekaran from the sterity of Maste Gunasekaran has the following all dental and Naks Somit Awet (TANSA) in Physical sciences for the year 2013. by the Government of Tam N Established Spectro Physics Research Laboratory for the part of ord in the fields of Spectmscopy, Materials Science, Molecular Dynamics, Medical Physics etc.
