The Post-Graduate and Research Department of Economics has distinguished itself to
be one of the oldest and the leading centers of learning Economics in India. As a Post-Graduate and
Research Department, with enviable legacy of illustrious teachers and alumni, it has carved a niche
for
itself as a center of learning in which Economics is taught with a difference. It is a matter of
pride
for the Department of Economics, Pachaiyappa's College that its alumni is holding positions of
responsibility in various Governmental Organizations. Some of the notable alumni who have made us

are, Former Chief Minister of Tamilnadu C.N.Annadurai, Former Professor of Economics N.G.Ranga, a
notable Parliamentarian, Prof.Muthiah, Prof.C.D.Rajeswaran, Former Union Commerce Minister
MurasoliMaran, Former PWD minister of Government of Tamilnadu Thiru.DuraiMurugan, Former Research
Director of Economics and Planning, Indian Bank Dr. Vanilarasu, a well known Professor in the
Department
of Economics, Former Vice-Chancellor, Manonmaniam Sundaranaar University and Former trustee PTB, Dr.
V.Shanmugasundaram, Dr. Prabhaakaran, Former student of Economics and Present Trustee,PTB who have
contributed to the growth of our Alma mater. The History of the Economics Department dates back to
the
year 1925 when the undergraduate course in B.A. Honors (Economics) was introduced. Having sprouted
as an
undergraduate department, it continues to grow and has created many milestones from being a
Post-Graduate department in 1942 to becoming a full-fledged research center with M.Phil. and Ph.D.
The College strives towards overall development of the students. We believe that college should
provide
a platform for student's intellectual and cultural growth. To achieve this growth among our
students,
the college has several associations which give the students an opportunity to explore themselves
and
chalk out a path of success.
