The Department of English was established in the year 1956 and has travelled a long way to reach the
present status as a post graduate and research department. In this moment of jubilation, we express
our sincere gratitude and respect to all our beloved retired staff members for their yeomen service
in this department. Sowing the seeds of faith and good deeds and teaching English has been the
responsibility of the department right from the time of its inception. On this strong foundation,
the department stands proudly as a torch bearer imparting the knowledge through English in this
illustrious college. At present the department functions with nineteen dedicated staff members.
The PG and Research department of English has organised a one day National Seminar on "Post
Modernism- Trend and Theory" on 29th March 2003.Our staff members have presented papers in national
and international seminars, conferences within the country and abroad. Some of them are occupying
the membership in the academic bodies of the universities and have given their valuable suggestions
in framing the syllabus for the English courses.
The Department has a big library with a
large number of books and rare collections authored by eminent scholars. Dr.P.Sekar, Principal,
Pachaiyappa's college, inaugurated the newly installed Smart Room On 25th March 2011 and named it as
Tagore Hall. Dr.J.Tulasi former HOD of English welcomed the gatherings.
The Department brought back the
tradition of conducting an Inter - collegiate quiz competition "PACHAIYAPPA'S LITQUIZ -2016" under
the headship of Ms.B. Sucharita. Colleges in and around Chennai participated in it. Quiz masters
were Dr. Prayer Elmo Raj and Mr. Vikas Munot. Participants of Anna Adarsh College for Women, Chennai
won the rolling shield for the year 2016-2017. Cash prize of Rs.5000/; Rs.3000/ and Rs.2000/ were
also awarded to the I, II and III prize winners.
The tradition of conducting
PACHAIYAPPA'S LITQUIZ has been earmarked every year. The Lit quiz for the 2017 brought in many
colleges from Chennai and we conducted by the quiz masters Dr. K.R. Vijaya, Dr.Prayer Elmo Raj and
Mr. Vikas Munot. The rolling shield the year 2017-18 was won by the team consisting of Mr. Krishna
and Mr. Ajith of III B.A. English of Vivekananda College, Chennai Cash prize of Rs. 5000/; Rs. 3000/
and Rs. 2000 were awarded to the I, II and III prize winner.
January, the month begins not only the
year but also the activities for the Chennai Literary Festival in collaboration with the University
Of Madras makes it an opportunity to recognise Literature and celebrate its relevance in life and to
spread awareness among students by organizing several events and workshops every year. Our
department has been a venue for its events and workshops with CLE Chennai Literary Festival
2014-2015 brought in illustrious personality IV. VARADHARAJAN Doordharshan's Tamil News Reader and
MR.RAVI GANESH PILLAI News Reader of Sun TV to conduct the Workshop on News reading and Compering.
Chennai Literary Festival 2015 - 2016 a
workshop was organised under the banner of the University of Madras in our college at the Norton
Hall The topic of the workshop BOOK WRITING with the CHIEF GUEST MR. OLIVANNAN GOPALAKRISHNAN
Founder and Member of Chennai Literary Association and CEO Emerald Publishers shared his ideas on
writing from his endless store of personal experiences and knowledge.
The second session was in the expert
hands of Dr. AJAYAKUMAR, Associate Professor and Director School Of Distance Education, University
Of Kerala: gave an expert workshop on VISUAL CULTURE - PHOTOGRAPHY, PAINTING AND LITERATURE, with
audio-visual examples it was fairly made clear to the students the trends of Advertisements and Mass
Media. Chennai Literary Festival of the year 2016 - 2017 drew attention to a larger gathering.
Workshop on CYBER SECURITY was organised and with the able and efficient officer DR. SYLENDRA BABU
I.P.S. Additional Director General of Police, Coastal Security Group, Tamil Nadu created awareness
on cyber security and keep a vigilant guard while using social media.
WORKSHOP headed Dr. MARAIMALAI
ILAKKUVANAAR Professor of Tamil, Presidency College, and Visiting Professor, University of
California Berkeley, DR. R. AZHAGARASAN, Associate Professor, Dept. of English, University of Madras
and DR. D. VEKATARAMANAN Associate Professor, Dept. of English, University of Madras gave a detailed
input on translating texts from source language to text language on the 9th January 2018.
In view of the expanding global
developments, our faculty members constantly update their skills so that they can initiate students
to new and unexplored areas and help them realize their potential. The management with its
farsighted vision is ever ready to help the department financially and motivate both staff and the
students to take additional challenges. In such a supportive background students are inevitably
drawn in and they too strive for unparalleled excellence. Hence we can proudly say that we have been
successful in good measure in extending our horizons and we will continue to work ceaselessly
towards excellence year,
